Our inclusive programs are for individuals with and without diverse abilities to participate in activities and classes together. With the Y's mission to be for all, we believe we are stronger and better when we are together.
Sensory Friendly Programs
Our sensory friendly programs focus on providing inclusive events for people of all abilities, while being aware of sensitivities to various stimuli. Examples of our events include sensory friendly splash pad exploration, baking, arts and crafting.
Bang the Drum
Bang The Drum combines traditional aerobic movements with the powerful beat and rhythm of the drums. Participants are able to engage their whole mind and body in this lively class. This group exercise class is specifically designed to be inclusive for people of all abilities.
Inclusion Camp (all ages)
Inclusion camp provides campers of all abilities with the opportunity to participate in planned activities, such as gym games, art projects, song singing, outside play and participants learn about the YMCA’s core values. Support staff are available. Camps at our Caylor-Nickel Foundation Family YMCA are run during winter, spring, summer and fall breaks.
Parent & Me Music Events
This therapeutic music class is specifically designed to be inclusive for those of all abilities. Participants and their parents will engage in therapeutic music-making experiences in a sensory-friendly environment.
Parents Night Out (Respite) (ages 4-12)
This program features fun and exciting activities for children, such as crafts and organized games! This program encourages children to make friends and socialize with their peers, while providing a time of self-care for the parents and caregivers.
Pom Class (ages 5-25)
Pom class combines music, rhythm, cheer and creativity. Participants will learn upbeat and exciting routines, while making friends and working together as a team. No experience is necessary, so come one come ALL! This class is specifically designed to be inclusive for people of all abilities. Note: This program is offered seasonally.
SNAP (Special Needs Aquatic Playtime) (all ages)
Special Needs Aquatic Playtime is open to those with physical, developmental and intellectual disabilities and their families/caregivers to enjoy this time of unstructured playtime in the pool together. Participating in healthy activities offers everyone the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
Trail Buddies (Adaptive Bike Riding program for all ages)
Trail Buddies invites people who have a disability or who are unable to pedal a bike independently to go for a ride in the fresh air using our specialized bike, known as a Duet Bike. This free, inclusive program allows children and adults to be pedaled by caring, trained volunteers with our specialized bike.
Trail Buddies is available to those of all ages.
Note: This program is offered seasonally.
Y Buddies (Volunteers assisting people with disabilities ages 8 - adult)
Y Buddies is a program that connects individuals with physical, developmental and intellectual disabilities with volunteers to participate together in programs, classes and activities at the Y! This support program is designed to foster friendships, build confidence and join those with common interests to participate in meaningful activities, all while creating memories!
Interested in Volunteering for Y Buddies?
The YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne has partnered with Turnstone, Easter Seals ARC and Camp Red Cedar to provide social events for those with disabilities in our community. Siblings and friends are welcome to attend. These events are offered at no cost to participants.
