Our adaptive programs are available for people of all abilities. We provide reasonable accommodations and aim to adapt programs so all individual needs are met.
Adaptive Baseball (ages 5 - adult)
The YMCA and the World Baseball Academy partner to host a 5-week program for children and young adults with physical, developmental and intellectual disabilities. This program will allow individuals the chance to gain specific baseball skills with individual support and assistance, while encouraging teamwork and life skills. Come check out the indoor turf field house and enjoy the game of baseball this fall! Note: This program is offered seasonally.
Adaptive Fitness & Wellness Training (ages 11 - adult)
This one-on-one training is designed for those with any diverse ability looking to become more active and reach their full potential with health and wellness goals. Participants and coaches will set goals and create a personalized workout plan. Coaches will also help train the participant on adaptive and standard equipment usage.
Adaptive Karate (ages 5 - adult)
This class combines Martial Arts and uses ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) through techniques such as: modeling, imitation, chaining and positive reinforcement. Classes will be capped at 5 per class to accommodate for more direct interaction. This program is specifically designed for individuals with physical, developmental and intellectual disabilities.
Adaptive Music (ages 5 - adult)
This therapeutic music class is specifically designed for those with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Participants will engage in therapeutic music-making experiences in a sensory-friendly environment. Participants will also learn social skills and work to increase focus on tasks. Note: This program is offered seasonally.
Adaptive Soccer (ages 4 - 10)
This adaptive soccer program is designed for children with physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities who struggle or need help with organized soccer and learning skills! Through participation in the program, participants learn to feel more positive about themselves in a safe & relaxed environment that promotes success mixed with fun & play. Note: This program is offered seasonally.
Adaptive Swim Lessons (ages 4 - Adult)
This class is designed for participants who have special needs, focusing on basic water skills and water adjustment to help gain confidence in the water and improve kicking and stroking ability. A participant will learn to feel more positive about their self in a safe and relaxed environment that promotes success mixed with fun and play.
Adaptive Swim Team (ages 8 - adult)
This introductory swim team is a collaboration between the YMCA, Special Olympics and GiGi’s Playhouse and is specifically designed for those ages 8+ with developmental disabilities. Participants will learn a variety of skills related to competitive swim, gain confidence in the water and build friendships. One does not need to be a current member of Special Olympics to participate. Adaptive Swim Team takes place at Jackson R. Lehman Family YMCA. Contact Rebekah Coffey for more information. Adaptive Tennis (ages 5 - 12)
This class is a partnership with the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne and Turnstone to teach individuals the basic foundation and skills of tennis! This class is designed for those with physical and developmental disabilities. Note: This program is offered seasonally.
Dancing with Diverse-Abilities (ages 5 - adult)
Through a partnership with the Fort Wayne Dance Collective, Dancing with Diverse-Abilities is for children, teens and adults with varying developmental and physical disabilities. This upbeat student centered program will have participants learning and creating their own dance moves, exploring with props and expressing themselves creatively. These classes promote health and wellness, while empowering students to explore movement and music in ways that are stimulating, creative and fun! Note: This program is offered seasonally.
Dream Team (ages 3 - adult)
Dream Team is a program that provides great opportunities to belong and achieve for children ages 3+ with physical, developmental and intellectual disabilities that may disqualify them from participating in typical community activities. Dream Team participants are included in year-round activities such as t-ball, swimming and bowling!
Employment Readiness Partnership
This employment readiness program encourages individuals with disabilities to gain workplace experience, alongside their job coach. Participants learn skills on the “front lines” in various departments of the YMCA.
